Camera or microphone issues during a video call

Fix blocked browser permissions and device conflicts that stop your camera or microphone working in a video consultation.

Video consultations check your camera and microphone before you join. If it can't reach one or both, here's how to fix it.

Check for a permissions warning

If the browser has blocked access, the device check screen shows Camera access is blocked, Microphone access is blocked, or Camera and microphone access is blocked. Click the matching Request camera access (or microphone, or both) button after allowing access in your browser — usually through a camera icon in the address bar.

Free up the device from other apps

If you see Could not access your camera or microphone with no clear permissions prompt, another application — a different video call, or a second browser tab — may already be using the camera or microphone. Close it and try again.

Pick the right device

On the Check your camera and microphone screen, use the Camera and Microphone selectors to choose the correct device if your computer has more than one, such as a built-in and an external webcam.

Still not working?

Refresh the page and re-join the consultation using the Join consultation button. If the picture or sound is still missing once you're in the call, use Turn on camera or check that your microphone isn't muted from within the call controls.
